About the Mountain

The Haleakala climb is an inactive volcano that is located in a National Park on the island of Maui in Hawaii. The 34km uphill test goes up to the Haleakala Lookout and Visitor Centre which is around 800m below the Observatory at the summit.

The Haleakala Highway, highway 378, goes right up to the summit with one of the steepest parts being the last 800m at around 9% but with an elevation of around 3050m.

The gradient on the Haleakala climb is steady for the most part of the climb at around 4-7%. There are 3 sections where the gradient elevates to 8-12% located at km 22, 28 and 30 but this has to be considered against the long distance of the climb and the elevation above 3000m. The key aspects of the climb to consider for this reason is pacing.

The closest airport is Kahului International Airport. The views of the sunset and sunrise are spectacular but be aware as the climb is in a national park a fee is levied for entry. The scenery is spectacular and is well worth the effort.
