About the Mountain

Sestriere is located close to the border of France and Italy. The village and ski resort is located in Italy. The average gradient is 5.2% while the maximum gradient is around 9%. Sestriere was used as one of the main venues for the 2006 winter olympics. The resort has hotels, cafes and shops.

Sestriere was part of stage 19 of the 2018 Giro d'Italia. Chris Froome made a lone 80km breakaway on the Colle Delle Finestre. Froome summited Sestriere alone and went on to win at the summit finish on the Jafferau.

Sestriere was used as the summit finish on stage 20, 30 May 2015, in the 2015 Giro d'Italia. Fabio Aru attacked the race leader Alberto Contador on the Finestre and managed to drop Contador. The time gap went up and down but Contador managed to recover slightly and hang on to win the Giro. Fabio Aru did not gain enough time to dislodge Contador but did go on to win stage 20.
