About the Design

The base colour for the Mapei kit was light blue with dark blue shoulders and side panels. This applied to both the jersey and the bibshorts. The main body of the jersey, front and back, had a lighter blue panel, which the same as current kits, had the main sponsors name on the chest with the kit maker, UCI and bike suppliers logos above the main sponsors name. At this time, the Sportful logo was still an S but it was half red and half blue on a white background as opposed to the mono colour version used today. The other major sponsor GB was rendered in white on a red circle directly below the Mapei name.

The main design detail takes up the bottom 3rd of the jersey. overlapping semi circles of blue with light blue lines symbilising wall adhesive products are behind a bunch of coloured cubes stacked randomly as if they had been dropped in place. The coloured cubes are repeated on the rear of the jersey and also on the front and rear of the bibshorts. This design detail comes courtesy of main sponsor Mapei's branding and whose products are for building concrete, sealants and adhesives amongst others. The sponsors names are repeated on the shoulder, rear and sides of the jersey and bibshorts. The Kerabond name on the side of the jersey has coloured cubes at the start and end of the name.

The arm warmers also carried Mapei's coloured cube design while the gloves were blue with the Mapei name in black with a white outline next to the red circular GB logo.

The Mapei kit certainly stood out in the Peloton and was most definitely one of cycling's iconic kit designs.
